Assembling A Compression Joint
Pipework, valves that are for common plumbing jobs can be connected in different ways. The simplest way to connect two pipes, a fitting or a valve is by using a compression fitting. Stratford Plumbers only use professional tradespeople. This type of fitting was designed to create tight seals by the compression of a semi-rigid ring so it spreads out in the space between the two pieces, securely filling the space. This is a basic guide to a compression fitting: With a hacksaw or a pipe cutter, cut the ends of the pipe square, with a round file, remove any burrs from the cut end. Place the cap nut on the pipe, now the olive. Make sure the sloping edges of the olive are of equal length. If one edge longer than the other, it should face the fitting. Push the body of the joint under the pipe, so that the end butts up against the ridge in the fitting. Slip the olive along the pipe until it is hard against the fitting. Screw up the cap nut hand tight, use a spanner on the cap nut and the fitting to tighten the joint. If you over tighten, the olive can be squashed and the joint will leak. A Stratford Plumber always carries the correct tools. If the olive is crushed, you may find that the pipe leaks, so, with a fine bladed hacksaw, carefully cut the olive off. Fit a new olive and reassemble. There are two ways of adding an extra seal to a compression joint. You can use PTFE tape, or a sealant that looks like white toothpaste, called ‘boss white’ or ‘plumbers mate’. Although compression joints don't generally need sealing compounds, if you have an awkward one that you can stop dripping, a turn of tape or a quick smear of compound should work. Once the joint is complete, turn the water on and watch carefully for leaks. Even if you discover a drip every half-hour, it still needs to be sorted, again with sealant or tape.<< Older post Newer post >>24/7 SERVICE NO CALL-OUT CHARGE GAS SAFE REG. PLUMBERS
